Vantablack for the automotive industry

The difference between an industry standard camera glare shield and a Vantablack 230 coated glareshield, Ansys™ BRDF modelling.
IMPORTANCE OF IMAGE QUALITY FOR ADAS FUNCTIONALITY
Clean images reduce the need for software solutions to remove the interference caused by:
-
Reflections from glareshields
-
Glare from overhead garage lighting
-
Night-time glare in poor lighting conditions
These issues can lead to:
-
Low speed crashes in traffic and parking situations
-
System drop-outs
IR systems can provide some back-up but place additional demands on processors and add cost. Reducing camera shroud interference is a proven low-cost highly effective way to improve image quality and reduce data processing requirements.
PRECISION MEASURED
WITH BRDF
The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) offers a comprehensive assessment of surface reflectance by measuring light scattering at all angles of incidence and reflection. Unlike Total Hemispherical Reflectance (THR) alone, BRDF provides a more accurate representation of real-world optical performance, capturing both specular and diffuse reflections. This enables precise evaluation of how materials like Vantablack control stray light across various viewing conditions.

HEAD-UP DISPLAY
Head up displays display vehicle telemetry directly onto the windscreen. Stray-light reduces the visibility and quality perception of these units.
Advantages of Vantablack®
-
Cannot cause fogging of glass, stable to 200°C
-
Prevents reflections from stray light
